Wisdom Teeth

So, I get to have my wisdom teeth taken out (only 3 since the fourth never developed). All three are impacted and one has broken through the gum. Yuck! I go for a consultation with the oral surgeon on Tuesday and then I'll get them out shortly after that. I'm hoping I can schedule it for a Thursday so I don't have to miss too many days of work.

I plan to stock up on lots of soft foods like pudding, soup, macaroni and cheese, applesauce, etc. so that I have food to eat while I can't chew. The worst part is that my jaw bone is set right where the wisdom teeth would be so I don't know how that will affect taking those two out. Figures that one of the bottom ones isn't the one that's not there.

T, my guy friend, said he'd take me to my appointment and help me out. It's convenient that he works and lives in my complex so he can swing by often to check on me.

On the money front, at least my insurance will cover most of the cost. I only have to pay a $75 deductible and 10% of the total cost (insurance covers 90%).

Ohhh. I'm sorry they're impacted and not erupted. My wisdom tooth was fully erupted so it was a piece of cake. On a side note, my colleague told me that her oral surgeon told her to drink a lot of pineapple juice before and after to reduce the swelling. Good luck!

Mine were fully erupted so it was no real problem when I got them out but for my sister and my nieces, it was more of a challenge. I'm glad you're all ready to go and you have someone to peek in on you. Take good care of you!

Wow, that is great insurance. Our dental is terrible. With my 13 year old we have spent close to 20,000 on his teeth alone already....and there are still future expenses coming. He is in braces now, but will neet a retainer after those are out. I personally need some oral surgery done and it will cost around 3,000 So just be thankful yours is paying so well!

Good insurance!!

It's not too bad of a surgery...esp. if you get a good oral surgeon. I had to have mine taken out two at a time once at 21, another at 29, because my bottom ones formed much quicker than the top. all were impacted and not showing. in the bottom ones, i felt some pain and had chipmunk cheeks; but the top ones were a BREEZE--I had an amazing surgeon for those.

You will be totally out of it for at least the first 5-10 hours after surgery, so i'm glad you have someone to take care of you. :) you'll need him the first day! have some ice packs, soup, and jello ready to go...you don't want to be cooking while on vicodin.
luck for a speedy recovery!!

Sounds like you have great insurance.

I'd add ice cream and mashed potatoes to the list. Also have regular pain killers on hand in case the mega ones don't agree with you.

Dental plans can be so horrible so it sounds like you have a very good one. Does your co. offer a flex plan? I use our flex card to cover all copays, it's great!

Good luck at the dentist.

Like the other commenter said, you will really be out of it for the first 5-10 hours. Its like your on drugs...but not good drugs...painful...uncomfortable drugs. You are lucky you will be having someone look after you.

The first week is the worse. I had 4 teeth taken out and only one of them were impacted. But it was no doubt the most terrible week in my life. But after that, it gets better. Also take as many days as you can off from work.

I also bought Slim fast, because after a few days your body really needs as much nutrition as possible. (I wasn't able to chew for over a week) Also get a spray bottle for those first few hours, your mouth gets really dry but your jaw cant handle drinking from a glass.

Hope that helps! Good Luck!

All 4 of mine were impacted, and I had all 4 extracted, at the same time. I was put under, and it was great. :) Drugs wore off in a couple hours, and I have to admit having a lot of pain on one side of my face. I also had dry socket, and had to have smelly medicated bandages placed in the wounds. That said, I'm really happy they're gone. They were causing me issues, and they were pushing all my teeth forward.

People's recovery times vary; I've heard of people who were back to eating regular foods the same day. I had the surgery done on Friday morning, and I think I went back to work the following Thursday. Took me about 3 weeks to really feel like myself again. It's smart that you're doing it before school starts!

Drugs, lots of drugs. Seriously. Talk to your oral surgeon about pain meds. It's not the right after that hurts, it's the 10 hours later that really hurts. Probably you will be numbed up or knocked out for the procedure if they are impacted. My dentist had a hard time getting out one of the lower ones and just the fact she had to "dig" out the tooth, my jaw and mouth hurt more from that than the actual extraction

I echo others, lots of soft food, protein drinks, ice packs.

I had my 3 impacted wisdom teeth removed under general anesthesia. I was expecting all kinds of misery, but it was a piece of cake.

When the 4th one made an appearance, it got infected and had to me removed immediately. When I asked an oral surgeon if they took my insurance, they said "sure" - liars, they had no arrangement. Anyway, that one resulted in much pain...very glad I had a leftover dose of percocet from stop-snoring surgery a few months earlier.
