Background:
The episode focused on Joanie, a 26 year old journalist, and her husband Josh. Joanie is a self-confessed shopping addict. They owe $10,000 on their car and $30,000 in a personal loan to Joanie's mom. They currently live in Joanie's mom's house rent and utility free, while her mom lives with the grandmother. Joanie's mom also refinanced her house to pay off Joanie's credit cards, which Josh does not know about.
Income: $3,900
Expenses: $6,300
Deficit: -$2,400
Deficit: -$2,400
When Larry checks out Joanie's closests, he sees that she separates her clothes by designer and that there is a ton of stuff with the tags still on it. Larry approximates that she has about 200 shoes and that each cost about $300, for a total of $60,000. In her closets and in storage, he says she has over $100,000 worth of clothes.
Contract:
Here is what Larry asked Joanie and Josh to do:
- Stick to budget
- Earn extra income
- Meet with realtor, planning to be out of mom's house within a year
- Inventory closets
- Sell clothing
- Open a joint checking account and use only cash
Budget:
Here is a partial list of their new budget:
- Clothing: $800 --> $0
- Eating Out: $1160--> $0
- Groceries: $560 --> $200
- Debt: $200 --> $910
- Savings: $0 --> $450
Update:
After a few weeks, Larry checked up on Joanie and Josh. Here is how they aredoing:
- Josh was able to get some extra gigs and work some overtime to bring in extra money.
- Joanie inventories her closet. She is still working on it because there was so much. She has over 344 shoes. Estimating the total amount of clothes and shoes in her closets to be 3,000, if each item was $200, she has $600,000 worth of stuff in her closets.
- She took over 100 items to consignment, bringing in $1,590.

Oh my gosh - I can't even imagine having that many clothes. Even with my weight and shape changing lately I only have 7 pairs of pants. So, technically only 3 fit. And only 1 is the right size.
Larry would tell me to go shopping if he looked in my closet - except for the shortage of cash. :-)
I wish I'd seen this one!!
I wish they'd put on a Big Spender marathon, as there are many shows I've missed........
I agree with the marathon. Excellent idea!
Gah! I've never heard of this show, and now I MUST GO FIND IT ON MY DISH!
Lordy, I can't imagine having that many clothes. i'll have to let me husband know this tidbit of info, because he is sure no one has more stuff than I do!
(Found you through green3 by the way!)
I saw this one too. My boyfriend and I love it and watch it together (despite his less than frugal tendencies). We still joke about how she was like, "That is REDICULOUS!" when she heard how much her stuff cost ($600K? Holy crap!). it was as if she'd never been in her closet before; like it was someone else that had filled it with crap. !
if you ask me, SHE is rediculous.
Holy crap! 600K in clothes? I wish I had seen that one.
Wow, I thought I was pretty bad! I can't even imagine how large her closet was?! And to think $600K in clothes??? That is INSANE, I wish I saw this..
While the clothes thing seems outrageous, I'm more shocked at the fact that someone would advise them to reduce eating out and clothing purchases to nothing.
Well, the clothing really makes sense and maybe thats something that is doable - but not eating out AT ALL when you're used to spending $800 a month doing seems like a recipe for failure, especially when you also cut the grocery budget by more than half as well.
But to me, it's expectations like those that make it so hard for people to make improvements. And I'd forever hate the idea of budgeting if all it meant is that I had to seriously deprive myself.
I have to agree with Donna Jean. The reason people fail is because they deprive themselves of things they enjoy to do. You can do it all, but in moderation (maybe going out once a week vs. every night).
600K in clothes? What is wrong with her husband? After all, our debts don't seem so bad... :)
I've never watched this show but have heard about it. Thanks for the recaps. It sounds very interesting!
Have you watched Suze Orman on Saturday evenings? I enjoy the show, especially the "can I afford it" segments.
sharon...I used to watch Suze Orman. I liked watching but just found I didn't have as much time to watch once I moved back to DC. I liked her "Can I Afford it" segment too...some of the things these people want to buy were hilarious.
