What a great idea!!!!

I was doing my daily reading of my favorite blogs, and came across a really great assignment that Baglady had written about from when she was in middle school living in Hawaii. I think it is a great idea for teaching kids about money and expectations. Basically each kid in her class was assigned an educational degree, marital status, and number of children...they then had to find a job, a place to live, and create a budget based on how much they made at their job. Check it out and maybe pass it on to anyone you know who could carry out this assignment, whether it's a teacher or even an individual parent.

In the area I live, we do a similar thing. It is called "Reality Town". Teachers in core areas have lessons building up to it. They fill out questionaires about career goals and such and all that is put into the computer, along with student GPA and each student is given a family and a job. The job comes with info on wages, loans they have and other important info. THen they have to pay rent, child care, utilities and all that other fun stuff. When we talk to the kids later, they all say it was an eye opener about how hard their parents work.

The link isn't working, but as a middle school teacher, I'd love to check it out if you can fix the link. It sounds like a great idea. I looked at Baglady's blog to try to find it on my own, but it didn't jump out at me. Thanks.

I'm not sure why it wasn't working for you. I just checked and it worked for me. But just in case, the title of the post is "The Cost of Living in Paradise Redux - A Financial Project All Young People Should Do".

It is a great idea to teach children how to spend money. I wish I had had such lessons in my childhood. Recently I've come across an interesting article about credit card education. You can find it at http://www.creditcardspecialist.com
